Water Pollution: Everything You Need to Know
This widespread problem of water pollution is jeopardizing human health. Unsafe water kills more people each year than war and all other forms of violence combined. Meanwhile, drinkable water sources are finite: Less than 1 percent of the earth’s freshwater is actually accessible for human use. Without action, the challenges will only increase by 2050, when global demand for freshwater is expected to be one-third greater than it is now. Additionally, not all countries and communities around the world have the same access to freshwater. Developing countries and communities in the global south are less likely to have reliable access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services, in large part due to systemic issues around racism. This inequality is known as environmental injustice, a system of oppression which can affect individual communities differently depending on the type of water pollution.
