USAID Grant No. 688-0702-G-00-6032-00 To Care Mali To Support A Program of Construction of Wells in the Macina Area of Mali
This grant is provided to CARE to increase the availability of drinking water in Macina Cercle in Central Mali through the construction of open cement lined wells. Specifically, CARE will construct 45 wells in each of the 15 villages in the area and will train local well workers to maintain them. To improve supplies of water for gardening and non-drinking needs, the workers will also receive training in the construction and repair of traditional earthen wells. Further, health and sanitation education will be provided in target villages. the project will contribute to the long-term capability of Macina Cercle to support an indigenous population of approximately 120,000 people and a population of some 7,000 displaced persons who have had to emigrate from their own regions in Northern Mali because of the drought.
