Op-ed: Water Pollution in Iowa Is Environmental Injustice
Environmental injustice and systemic racism affect communities throughout the United States, but many communities in rural states face additional challenges. The farming activities prevalent in many rural areas can inflict serious damage on water resources, but the damage does not involve all communities equally. This resource focuses on how many poor communities and communities of color in Iowa face worse water quality then richer and whiter areas in the state. Runoff from farms pollute rivers and water sources throughout the state, but marginalized communities have fewer resources to clean the water, test its quality for health standards, and make it safe for use.
