This report from April 2020 outlines the financial impacts of Covid-19 on water utilities in the United States. The pandemic was predicted to cost water companies nearly $14 billion during the early stages of lockdowns due to low customer growth, decreases in non-residential water needs and moratoriums on water shut offs for non-payment. To offset lower revenues and higher expenses many water providers were forced to delay or cancel $5 billion worth capital expansion, leading to a $32 billion net negative impact on communities and a loss of 75,000 to 90,000 jobs. Overall, the pandemic will cost utilities $27 billion and usher in an era of uncertain for water providers.
