Annual Report of Mona Reclamation Experimental Project, July 1980 - June 1981
Agricultural production in the Indus Plan is low as compared to similar areas in other parts of the world. This situation exists despite the fact that the fertile Indus Plain has a potential to increase the production by 3 to 4 times, many constraints have been recognized for low yields, among which traditional cultivation practices low level of inputs, lack of plant protection measures and waterlogging and salinity are, important. The problem of waterlogging and, salinity aggravated to such an extent that towards the late fifties, it was recognized as the primary issue facing irrigated agriculture. As a remedial measure, a large number of tube wells are being installed under various SCARPs to restore the productivity of affected land. Irrigation supplies have almost doubled in sweet zone areas with the resultant increase in crop acreage and production.
