Socio-Economic Impact and Farmers' Assessment of Nile Tilapia Culture in Bangladesh
A socioeconomic study of tilapia culture in seasonal ponds in Bangladesh indicated that these unused or under-used seasonal water bodies, most of which are actually ditches, can be beneficially used for farming tilapia. The tilapia culture technology is simple, requiring very low labor input and hence can also be undertaken by women and children. In addition to economic returns, the implementation of the technology resulted in social benefits to farmers, in that they were also able to present fish to their neighbors, resulting in better relationships.
