Minyambou Community Development Water Project in Irian Jaya, Indonesia
Results of a consultancy to advise Minyambou Community of Irian Jaya, Indonesia on a proposed water supply project is presented. The bulk of the report is devoted to a detailed discussion of the project in terms of planning and preparation, system design, and implementation. Consideration is also given to the possible role of the Irian Jaya Development Information Service Center in disseminating information regarding water problems and their solutions. Several major recommendations are made. (1) In view of the extreme underdevelopment of the area, the project should not only provide water, but promote community development and participation; to this end, training of local people, especially in basic masonry, should be incorporated into the project. (2) A person experienced in implementing simple village water systems should supervise the project. (3) The budget should be revised to account for training and personnel needs. (4) The present implementation schedule is unrealistic and should be revised; complete design information for all of the 68 proposed systems should be collected during the project's first year and no physical targets adopted until the second year. (5) Initially installed systems should be closely monitored, several options tested, and the information used for design modification. Further suggestions are included in a summary presentation of findings. Appendices include standard designs for a 3-cubic meter reservoir, a 1-cubic meter collection chamber, and a public standpipe.
