Haiti - Cholera: Fact Sheet #10, Fiscal Year (FY) 2011
This factsheet provides an overview of humanitarian assistance to address widespread cholera outbreak in Haiti. The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports that water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) activities'including water trucking, water supply chlorination, waste management, and soap and water purification tablet distributions'have returned to activity levels prior to the December 7 announcement of preliminary election results, which resulted in civil unrest and temporarily suspended some cholera response activities. ? Haiti's overall cholera case fatality rate (CFR) remains at 2.2 percent, while the CFR in Port-au-Prince is 1.2 percent. OCHA indicates that the lower CFR in Port-au-Prince is due to the greater accessibility of cholera treatment facilities in the capital city than in rural areas. USAID's Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) is targeting WASH and health interventions to rural areas?including funding and providing supplies to cholera treatment facilities in outlying areas?to help lower CFRs.
