Green Infrastructure: Ecosystems in the City and the City as Ecosystem
GI is the newest paradigm in urban planning and recreation. It has the potential to help reduce urban heat island, improve air quality, and provide psychological benefits. Although these newly designed ecosystem patches have so many benefits, the article questions why the implementation of them have been more rapid. There are several reasons for this, such as residents' negative perception, maintenance requirements, or impacts on property values. Multibillion dollar investments in green infrastructure are being made to complement the traditional hardened civil (grey) infrastructure. However, current design and implementation of green infrastructure is still experimental, particularly when scaled to whole watersheds.
