Feasibility of Local Manufacture of the Aid Hand - Operated Water Pump and Other Technology Appropriate for Rural Water Supply Programs in the Philippines
There is a need for effective rural water supply programs in the Philippines. During the next five years, the population is expected to increase by 1.3 million per year. Water and sanitation related to diseases remain a significant health problem. At the present time some 23.8 million people utilize water often of doubtful quality from various sources such as open wells, rain water cisterns, lakes and streams. The need for a cost-effective hand pump, faucet, meter, and screen is readily apparent in the light of the need for rural water supplies. Most of the supply systems in rural communities will be provided by hand-operated water pumps or small-scale piped systems. The need for a cost-effective shallow-well and deep-well hand pump for multi-family use is apparent.
