East African Fisheries Research
GRANT, TECH ADVISORY ASSISTANCE ARE PROVIDED TO EAST AFRICA FRESHWATER FISHERIES ORGANIZATION (EAFFRO) TO DEVELOP CAPABILITY TO CONDUCT FISHSTOCK RESEARCH ON CONTINUING & INDEPENDENT BASIS. EAFFRO RESEARCH PROVIDES INFORMATION DATA BASE PERMITTING MEMBER STATES (KENYA, TANZANIA & UGANDA) TO REGULATE LAKE AND RIVER FISHERIES FOR MAXIMUM OFFTAKE AND TO INFORM FISHERMEN WHERE & HOW TO FISH MOST EFFICIENTLY. FOUR US FISHERIES BIOLOGISTS - 2 SPECIALIZING IN IN-SHORE FISHERIES RESEARCH, 1 OFF-SHORE RESEARCHER & A FISHERIES RESEARCHER STATISTICIAN - WILL ASSIST IN EAFFRO RESEARCH AND ON-JOB TRNG OF ITS STAFF. EFFORTS WILL FOCUS ON STUDY OF COMMERCIALLY IMPORTANT FISH SPECIES (TILAPIAS, BAGRUS, CLARIAS, HAPLOCHROMIS, SYNODONT IS, NILE PERCH & MORMYRIADS) DETAILING THEIR REPRODUCTION,BREEDING,GROWTH,LIFESPAN,HABITS,PREDATORS, AND DISEASES. LOCALES FOR EAFFRO ACTIVITIES ARE LAKE VICTORIA, LAKE BARINGO AND NALVASHA IN KENYA, LAKE TANGANYIKA IN TANZANIA AND LAKES KIOGA AND ALBERT IN UGANDA. OTHER ACTIVITIES WILL CONSIST OF CATCH ASSESSMENT SURVEYS AND EXPERIMENTAL GILL NETTING & BEACH SEINING. TECHNICIANS WILL MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MECHANIZATION OF CANOE FISHING INDUSTRY AND DETERMINE FEASIBILITY OF USING LIGHT IN-BOARD TRAWLERS FOR IN-SHORE FISHING. BIOLOGIST STATISTICIAN WILL ASSIST IN COMPILATION & PROCESSING OF FISH DATA INCLUDING ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF CATCH, DISTRIBUTION, MARKETING & OTHER DATA COLLECTED ON NATL BASIS. DATA WILL BECOLLECTED ON COSTS & EARNINGS OF COMMERCIAL TRAWLERS AND THE IMPACT OF COMMERCIAL TRAWLERS ON TRADITIONAL FISHERMEN ASSESSED. TWO EAST AFRICAN BIOLOGISTS CURRENTLY IN TRAINING IN CANADA WILL UNDERSTUDY WITH US SCIENTISTS UPON THEIR RETURN. USAID WILL FINANCE US TRNG IN FISHERIES BIOLOGY FOR 2 ADDITIONAL COUNTERPARTS. RESEARCH, FIELD EQUIPMENT AND REFERENCE BOOKS & JOURNALS WILL ALSO BE PROVIDED. EAFFRO WILL PROVIDE BASE SALARIES FOR US TECHNICIANS AND TRAINING SALARIES FOR COUNTERPARTS. PRIMARY BENEFICIARIES ARE EAFFRO AND ITS PERSONNEL.
