Coral Reef Fisheries At Cape Bolinao, Philippines: An Assessment of Catch, Effort, and Yield
Monthly catch per unit effort, total efforts and total catch were estimated in an 11 km intensively fished coralline shelf area near Cape Bolinao, Pangassinan, Philippines, June through October 1986, for three principal artisanal fisheries: fish trap, spear, and hook-and-line. Catch per unit effort estimates and annual catch per fishing ground estimates were, respectively: trap, 129 g/haul, 2.28 mton/km year; spear, 1.33 kg/man hr, 4.13 mton/kma yr; hook-and-line, 590 gm/line hr, 1.15 mton/km yr. The estimated annual yield for the entire study area was 4.39 mton/kmi yr. This figure was found comparable to other, similar exploited Indo-Pacific systems. It is probably conservative because other fishing methods were employed in the area, principally, gleaning and fish blast.ng. The latter is probably significant but it was proved impossible to estimate. a matrix presentation of catch per unit of effort and catch per defined area is proposed and discussed.
