Climate Displacement in Bangladesh
Bangladesh is at the epicenter of one of the world’s greatest environmental challenges: climate displacement. Nearly 2/3’s of the country is less than 5 meters above sea level, posing serious risks to millions of people as sea levels rise. Climate change is also increasing salinization, coastal and inland flooding, and cyclone frequency and intensity, hurting much of the Bangladeshi population, specifically the poor and ethnic minorities. Thousands of Bangladeshis have been forced to move to the capital Dhaka, straining the city’s already unstable water and sanitation infrastructure. New international laws must be enacted to safeguard climate refugees and efficiently manage remaining water resources.
