Community Water Supply and Sanitation in Sudan
The purpose of the visit was to analyze ongoing and proposed USAID projects as well as other more general water and sanitation problems in Sudan. It is recommended that a water supply and sanitation component be added to the ongoing Northern Primary Health Care and Rural Health Care projects. Actions are recommended to improve the quality of water supply available in rural health care facilities served by these projects and to promote sanitation at these facilities through the provision of improved pit latrines. Funding is recommended for a proposal that would substitute small diameter shallow wells fitted with hand pumps for the originally proposed diesel-driven deep wells in order to minimize adverse environmental impacts.
